Supporting eco-friendly textile printing with sustainable color you can trust
At Sensient Imaging Technologies, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to environmentally responsible inkjet technology drives our innovation and product development, and we are passionate about providing our customers and partners with the tools they need to reduce their impact on our planet.
We believe we have a responsibility to keep talking about, and bring attention to, ways both our business and our industry can improve their sustainability credentials, which is why we’re excited to share our new video which sets out how we support the textiles industry in minimizing it’s environmental impact, without compromising on color, performance or quality.
According to WWF, the textiles industry pumps 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and uses 378 billion litres of water, every year. With 200 tons of fresh water needed to dye just 1 ton of fabric, and with 20% of industrial water pollution stemming from the industry, it’s clear that textile manufacturers need to reassess their processes.
From using renewable materials that don’t damage the natural environment, to designing products to be reusable or recyclable, there are a multitude of approaches textile manufacturers can take. One such approach is to embrace the very latest digital inkjet technology, which delivers reductions in environmental impact while enhancing color quality, durability and precision. A more environmentally friendly process, digital printing allows for an average reduction in water consumption of 60%, energy consumption of 55% and a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to conventional print methods such as rotary screen printing.
Our understanding of the unique challenges our partners face, and our expertise in the chemistry of color, is driving breakthroughs in sustainable digital ink technology, for example with our water-based sublimation ink ElvaJet® Coral. A high-performance ink for direct printing onto polyester fabrics, ElvaJet® Coral prints directly onto the substrate, removing the waste from transfer paper and residual ink that is typical during a sublimation transfer process – while drastically cutting water usage from the 50 liters required for direct disperse printing to 1 liter.
